June 2020 District Updates

Dear all,

I hope you’re all continuing to keep well and safe.  As you’ll remember, 1 June 2020 was supposed to have been our Godalming District Scouts AGM. It was then that Anne Bott would have stepped into the District Commissioner role with all fanfare and excitement! As that wasn’t possible, we decided to postpone the meeting – and the handover – until we’re all able to be together again. We hope and pray that it will be sooner rather than later, and you’ll know everything as soon as we do! More information about plans for restarting face to face scouts will be shared on the HQ webinar this Wednesday.

Running online programmes

In the meantime, we know that many of you have been offering unbelievably fabulous Scouting over Zoom!  Thank you all so much for your efforts and enthusiasm – you’re such an inspiration.  There have been loads of pictures on FB, but here is a link to a video that Lisa at the 2nd Cubs made  https://www.dropbox.com/s/976eqs60wlr35xe/2GC%20in%20Lockdown.mp4?dl=0.  Check online for more programme ideas if you’re running short! Also, do consider joint Zoom meetings with other Colonies, Packs, or Troops either from Godalming or farther afield as distance is no longer an issue!

Free Zoom licenses for groups

Also, to help you with Zoom, HQ has arranged licenses for every Group, District, and County! Everything you should need for setting up your Group should be here: https://www.scouts.org.uk/volunteers/scouts-at-home/staying-safe-online/digital-platforms-for-scouts/zoom-account-sign-up/

Administration, training and appointments

Many thanks to all those administrators who are being clever with numbers to make sure we’re in a strong position to start face to face Scouting again as soon as we’re able! Steve Argyle, the District Treasurer, has been in touch with your Group Treasurers to make sure everyone is happy with their financial status regarding subs. You all seem to be managing very well and the District will also benefit from some substantial aid grants that the Councils have made available.  Ali Gisvold has been encouraging everyone to use some of their Quarantine Time to complete their training, and you all have made huge strides there!

Godalming is on track to becoming one of, if not the, first Districts in Surrey to be 100% GDPR compliant! Not that it’s a competition between DCs, but if you could help me – I mean us – win, that would be amazing!  Also, the Appointments Advisory Committee is still meeting regularly and we’re still recruiting new leaders!

Explorers in Godalming

Some of those new leaders are with the Explorers.  Our Unit closed down just before lockdown started, but a new team of volunteers across the district and farther afield are working on how we can transform Explorers in Godalming, and the western Surrey 'cluster'. They're also looking at support for young leaders and scout network too. Thanks to everyone who has been involved so far. There's more information about the project available here https://www.godalmingscouts.org.uk/project25 and we'll keep you updated with further progress over the coming weeks and months.

If you know of any young people who might be interested in joining the new explorers unit, please do encourage their parents/carers to get in touch at: explorers@godalmingscouts.org.uk And if you know you or anyone you know might be interested in supporting explorers as a volunteer, we'd of course, love to hear from you too!

Take good care of yourselves, many thanks for everything, and we’re so looking forward to meeting again!
And, of course, if you have any questions, queries, worries, or comments for Anne or me, please do email or ring!

Julia and Anne
