What is Scouting?

Active Image

The Scout Association is a World Wide Organisation with over 208 million members in over 208 countries

The purpose of Scouting is to contribute to the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potentials, as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities.

Scouting uses a Method, which is young people, in partnership with adults:

  • enjoying what they are doing;
  • learning by doing;
  • participating in varied and progressive activities
  • making choices for themselves
  • taking responsibility for their own actions;
  • taking increasing responsibility for others;
  • taking part in activities outdoors;
  • sharing in prayer and worship;
  • making and living out their promise;

This is mostly done within Scout Groups with an enjoyable and varied range of challenging activities.  The Scout groups are split into "sections" based on age although there will be many opportunities where the sections come together for activities:

Beaver Scouts - Age 6 to 8 years old

Cub Scouts - Age 8 to around 10.5 years old

Scouts - Age 10.5 to 14 years old

Explorer Scouts - Age 14 to 18 years old

Network - Age 18 to 25 years old

All Adult Leaders and Helpers are volunteers and help on whatever basis they are able.  Some are Uniformed some are not.  There are many ways to volunteer - based on your skills and the time you are able to give.  Some examples include administration; finance; adult support and training; working with young people; fundraising; buildings maintenance; grounds maintenance; sharing a particular skill/interest.

Whilst we have a need for more regular help, any time you are able to give could make a real difference to the young people in scouting.

On our website you will find more detailed information about each of the sections, and if you wish to join us - as an adult or young person - please fill in the forms.  Please be aware that you should expect to assist the group you join in some way.

You may not be aware but based on our waiting lists we could start 2-3 new Beaver Scout Colonies and at least 1 more cub pack - except that is very difficult to find enough adults to run the new sections (2-3 adults are needed for each section opened).  Could you be one of those adults?  Please contact us to find out more.  No experience is required - just enthusiasm - there is always support available.
