Over 115 Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts and Scouts joined together to enjoy a fun-packed afternoon in the Phillips Memorial Park in Godalming to celebrate being part of the Scouts Association. Local Scout Groups represented included Godalming, Farncombe, Milford, and Witley.
Beavers and Cubs Scouts took part in different games, while Scouts were challenged to show their knowledge of fair trade goods and to demonstrate their ability at knots. Everyone then sat down to a picnic, after which they took part in their renewal of promises, and six adult leaders were presented with awards of merit, recognising the exceptional contributions they had made to Scouting over the years. Finally, a duck race was held on the river, with prizes awarded by the Godalming Town Mayor Cllr Jane Thomson, to the lucky winners.
District Commissioner, John Richardson, said, “Scouting is the largest voluntary movement for young people in the UK, and this was an occasion when local representatives were able to come together to mark their involvement in the association. Normally, we gather together more formally on St George’s Day, but this year the Easter calendar made that very difficult, so we decided to do something a bit different. The weather was kind to us, and I know everyone really enjoyed the event. It was a particular pleasure to be able to hand out awards to six adult leaders, all signed by Bear Grylls, the Chief Scout“
“We are always very keen to encourage new adult volunteers to join us, and help and training is available for every new voluntary helper,” he added.
