Scouting's Second Century Begins....... |

On the 1st August 2007 the second century of Scouting began. The largest world-wide youth organisation with over 28 million members began with a camp for 20 boys on Brownsea Island.
As it remains to this day our members come from all backgrounds and wear a uniform recognised across the world. It should be remembered that Scouting is a voluntary organisation - not just for the uniformed leaders but other supporters (group chairman, treasurer, secretary, fundraising and district team).
2007 was a celebration of the past 100 years as well at looking forward to the next century of scouting. In Godalming District and Surrey County as with many other scout districts and counties numbers have increased over 2007. The biggest challenge is to get volunteers to come forward to take up a role that suits their skills and availability to ensure groups and districts can function. For instance many more Beaver colonies could start up (for 6 to 8 year olds) based on waiting lists if more adults would come forward to lead and assist in this section.
At the beginning of August 2007 the 21st World Scout Jamboree came to the UK. 40,000 scouts, leaders and other volunteers from across the world took part in a once in a lifetime opportunity. Godalming District sent 4 young people to this special event.
The Centenary year also saw a camp bring together for the first time our three local districts for a camp for young people from age 6 to 25 supported by various adult volunteers and other additional activities. Over the course of the weekend over 900 young people and volunteer adults were part of this special event on land owned by Hampton Estates near Seale. The official opening was carried out by Sir Richard Thornton. Activities on the Saturday included Aerial Runway, Blogzone, Air Rockets, Reptile talks, Chariot building, Petrol go-karts, Assault Course, Fire lighting, Flatbread Cooking, Handicraft, Archery, Bouncy Castles amongst many others.
Do you have a skill that you think young people would enjoy - perhaps you could help some complete one of their badges - or perhaps you could help run/assist with one of the sections (doesn't have to be every week!) - or perhaps you could help on the non-uniform side with [for example] fundraising - or as a treasurer. There are a wide range of roles that are essential to running a successful District or Group all geared to giving the best support to the Young People as they learn by doing, have fun and learn new skills and good citizenship.
